ABOUT THE HERBS

Except for Phellodendron bark and Anemarrhena rhizome, APR Nourishing Formula (Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan) contains all the herbs that constitute Rehmannia Six (Liu Wei Di Huang Wan), a well-renowned classical formula addressing Kidney and Liver Yin deficiency with Empty Heat. The two herbs added to Rehmannia Six in APR Nourishing Formula provide increased cooling effects, allowing it to address more severe Empty Fire patterns, as well as Heat accumulations in the Lower Burner.

Three of these six herbs are tonics. Raw Rehmannia root nourishes Kidney Yin and cools Blood; Asiatic cornelian cherry nourishes Liver Blood and Yin, and helps astringe Kidney Essence leakage; Chinese yam rhizome astringes Essence while helping in avoiding Dryness in the Kidneys, Lung and Middle Burner.

Balancing the potential cloying effects of these three tonics are three moving and draining herbs. Asian water plantain rhizome promotes urination in the Lower Burner where raw Rehmannia root acts, giving it a cooling action. Poria provides gentle Spleen support and leaches Damp from the Middle Burner where Chinese yam rhizome acts. Tree peony root bark clears Heat and drains Fire from the Liver, moderating the Empty Heat accumulating in the body. Asiatic cornelian cherry warms and astringes.

To this base formula of six herbs, Phellodendron bark and Anemarrhena rhizome are added. They work as a pair to clear Heat and protect the Yin, respectively, adding significantly to the overall cooling effect of APR Nourishing Formula.

If there are signs of Spleen Qi deficiency, adding a Spleen Qi tonic like Six GentlePets (Si Jun Zi Tang) is advisable. If Yang becomes depleted, using Rehmannia Eight Combination (Ba Wei Di Huang Wan) can help counter this tendency.
